PRE-CANON
Angel is a siren of the borderlands world, one of six that exist at any given time. For the other sirens, this means unimaginable powers, instant respect mixed with fear for their abilities -- and for good reason, of the ones met and that are commonly known, they command armies, make cities fly, melt people's faces off and prove to be devastating fighters, just to start with. Unfortunately for Angel, she is the daughter of Handsome Jack, and that would mean that her life took a different turn to suit his plans.
Angel herself possess of incredible intelligence and the ability to interface into most electronic systems, having being describe as "the mind the size of a planet" and her "control core" is just that, she is the hub that most Hyperion technology is run from, overseeing Jack's technologies and planet wide surveillance of Pandora. However this is not a willing existence, and she would later to refer to her confinement as a lifetime of servitude. It is not clear when exactly, Jack stopped being a good father and slipped further into straight out and out psychological abuse of his daughter, part of his own downfall, but at least in Angel's case, her life took a turn when her siren powers first appeared. Jack, and Angel's mother, both then low level Hyperion workers, hid Angel's existence as a Siren, as well as started running testing on her, at some early point. Angel's power however, even from their early stages, were not stable, and her mother suggested that she be "shut down". Around this time, though its unclear exactly what happens, Angel's mother was killed, allegedly due to her lack of control. (Or at least, what Jack claims, it is only noted that she "disappeared" after her suggesting Angel be shut down). Not just her mother either, it seems even afterwards her power fluctuations claimed the lives of dozens of workers.
But however exactly it turned out in those early years, Angel was locked up in her control core when she was around six or seven, and has been there ever since. Though it seemed, Angel loved her father very much like any little girl, after her mother's death and Angel's being put in the control core, their relationship would go downhill. To avoid suspicion and to protect Angel being used by his enemies and to hide the fact she was a siren, he had her pose as an AI, and given her ability to hack computers apparently with her mind, it was certainly an easy ruse and one she fell into well. When she first met by the Vault Hunters, she posses as one, the truth not being known for many years later. This, altogether, proved a lonely and empty life, no doubt at times fearful of herself and for others around her, and devoid of much happiness. Her relationship with Jack wouldn't go truly downhill until after Jack took over Pandora, as in a few of the echologs, they tease each other and she talks to him like any teenager does to their father.
BORDERLANDS 1 - 2Angel: "Don't be alarmed. I need you to stay calm, and don't let on that anyone is talking to you. Start making your way off the bus. You don't have any reason to trust me, but I need you to believe that I am here to guide you, I'm here to help you find the vault."
[...]
Angel: "That was the first step on your journey. You must listen; who I am is not important. The first thing you must know - the vault is real. [...] This world is full of dangers. Steel yourself, and go. I will be watching."
Perhaps because of or in spite of her father, Angel however did not grow up as outwardly cruel as he was, or in fact at all. When she meets the first set of vault hunters, Roland, Mordecai, Brick and Lilith, she proved helpful and encouraging as much cryptic and aloof to them. The vague cryptic way of talking was in part due to Jack putting words in her mouth to tell the Vault Hunters, being their Guardian Angel and him the God with the Big Plan he was arranging. The kindness however, is very much her, shown in quite a few little ways, encouraging them fully at every turn and in instances with CL4P-TP, mostly considered irritating and happy to watch it suffer in pain by everyone that runs into it, she sympathized with his pain, and instructed the vault hunters as to how to help and repair him, and being glad to see when he was feeling better.
She's also the one that insists to Jack not to fight against the robots frustrating programming that meant it needed to dance all the time, instead saying that he should work with it, not against it. No doubt in part to the limited involvement she can take in any situation and having to use others as her proxy, her mind being her best weapon, and the way Jack himself as her primary contact point. She prefers not out and out conflict, instead solutions around it, if she can, and if not, looks to assist the people she cares about as much as she can in their fight. Multiple times through the series she goes out of her way, eventually at the end when its to her own detriment, to help the vault hunters.
That is the nicer aspect of it, underneath that is very much her weapon and coping mechanism the only one she's been left with and taught so well by her father, her outward helpfulness doesn't seem all that genuine given that she uses it to lure and then betray both sets of vault hunters, even if ultimately doing this means her guilt out ways her own actions and devotes herself to stopping Jack... it's still masterful manipulation and lying -- at first to the vault hunters on behalf of Jack, helping them get to the vault, and then later, tricking them into taking a uplink device that allowed her to hack their shields so the city could be bombed, all Angel's doing. Then to Jack himself, as she continues to pretend that she is working for him all the while she's helping the Vault Hunters plan his death, hiding the fact that she's a siren and Jack's daughter right up until the end and they see her face to face for the first time. She is good at disguising and hiding herself, even if it's just to protect herself, lyind somewhat a necessity of her existence as when Jack goes into rages and frustrations about complications in finding the vault, he rants and raves at her about why isn't working, and why isn't she working in one instance, and whilst she sounds afraid of him, tries to do her best to deflect, though it seems she can't always.
In these cases however, it shows that she's a skilled diplomat as after she tricks the Vault Hunters the second time around, she manages to talk them around into listening to her again even after all she just did to them.
Despite however all that she does, and is capable of, underneath all that Angel is just a normal young woman who wants to do normal young woman things, most especially, have friends of her own. This isn't as obvious when she's younger and her relationship with Jack is still on even ground, and she keeps up the facade of being an all knowing watcher with the first vault hunters. It's with the second that she seems to reach out more with them personally, showing her own opinions and quirks. Her want of swearing that's be trained out of her that she stubbornly keeps at, her at times incredibly dry and snarking humor that shows who she is more, and how she reaches out to them to help them. She is excited and happy every time she speaks with them, and to help them in whatever way she can. That being really where her relationship with Handsome Jack begins to fall apart. She constantly calls the vault hunters friends, and seems excited to do so, and after her first betrayal of them in Borderlands 2, she is deeply sadden that they aren't anymore and that they can't trust her. All of her outward experiences she wishes for and craves for but in time, are denied by Jack, first by his locking her up for her own good, then his using her to turn against people she ends up coming to care for over and over again, and in the end, when he finally turns over any chance for a life of her own with his persut for power by using her to charge the vault key. Something which in the end, she has no way out of given how much eridium he pumps her with.
Eridium being a substance that is a super powered drug for sirens. He pumps her with so much of it as part of his master plan, that she is as powerful as a siren can be, but also doomed. To be cut off from it, means she would die. In the end, when she is forced to betray those who she calls friends again, she decides that enough is enough, she won't live like this anymore. She asks the vault hunters to kill her and so in turn end Jack's chance of ever charging the vault key. Lilith, another siren, uses it multiple times to fuel herself, but only in small amounts, but what Jack does to Angel is described as those that see it as monstrous, and in the ensuing fight it shows how powerful Angel has become, the horrific nature of what Jack and Angel's relationship ( and her own coping mechanism to the worst of his behaviors ), and her own strength of will to fight until the very last to stop Jack in the only way she can.Jack: "So this is how you bandits fight, is that it? Can't come straight for me, you gotta kill an innocent girl?"
Angel: "That's how he works - he'll try to guilt you, to make you think it's all your fault. Don't listen."
[...]
Jack: "Sweetheart, everything you could have ever wanted is within these four walls! Angel, do you have any idea how much I've sacrificed for you? The bandits I've killed for you, the people I've manipulated for you -- everything I have done is to protect YOU."
Angel: [ignoring Jack] "Promise me you'll kill him, friend."
Which it's difficult to say at what point or which in particular thing tipped it over the edge, no doubt it was a combination of having friends for the first time since she was a child, realizing that she was never going to escape her life now, or Jack's it seems emotional and psychological manipulation of her finally stopped working altogether to keep her in line, that she turns against Jack and it seems, for the first time in a long and now her last, makes a choice for herself about herself. Where before this, when she met the first vault hunters, she is passive to Jack's will, even if its somewhat reluctant, it seems over the years and in between all these abuses of herself and her body, she finally does something for herself -- and stubbornly, her last words are spent thanking the vault hunters for finally freeing her, and cursing her father for what he's done.
She finally feels free, in some aspects, dying helping to make Pandora a better place.
